The Friends of the Guilford Library, founded in 1973, now numbers approximately 800 members. Friends provide library programming, author appearances, hospitality, and transportation to events.

They organize the library's annual Fall Book and Bake Sale, now a highlight of the library year. A paperback book sale will be held Saturday May 3 from 9-3. Profits from the book sale fund programs, equipment and staff development.

The Friends of the Library publish a newsletter, News & Views, three times a year, in the winter, spring and fall. This newsletter highlights upcoming events at the library, and includes articles of interest to library users, profiles of staff members, suggestions for reading, and more. Membership in the Friends ensures that you will receive the newsletter and all events flyers in the mail.

The Friends can arrange for home service delivery for home-bound patrons. Visit our home service page for more information.

In addition, the Friends sponsor the FOL Bus Trip to locations of scenic and historic interest, both in and out of Connecticut. Friends meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month. Please consider joining this active, enthusiastic group. Call 453-8282 for more information.

What Are Friends For

Friends provide essential books, materials and programs not covered by the Guilford Library Association funds and the Town budget.

Friends purchase adult and juvenile books, CDs, DVDs, Books on Tape and Books on CD.

Friends meet technology needs such as computers and printers for use by library patrons and staff.

Friends run the Book and Bake Sale, the largest fundraising event of the year. A paperback book sale is held every May, and the two-day Book and Bake Sale is held on the last weekend of September or the first weekend in October.

Friends fund discount passes to nearby aquariums, zoos and museums.

Friends offer programs and talks, including Lunch and Learn, Author Programs, and Book Discussion Series.

Friends reach out to the community, with Home Service delivery, readings in nursing homes, additions to the Library's Foreign Language and Large Print collections, Talks for Seniors, and more.

Friends underwrite the cost of professional development for library staff through continuing education and conferences.

The Friends send out their annual membership drive letter in December. Please consider supporting the Friends, by volunteering your time and talent or donation.
